About the Startup Meet Our Founders Bill and Courtney Describe your products in 3 words. Good. Clean. Fun. How did you come up with the idea for this product? In 2011, Bill and his wife Courtney Apple learned that 5 million children die each year from water-related illness, deaths that can be prevented with simple hand washing alone. In 2012, they took a trip to Haiti and saw firsthand the effect the give back model could have on people’s lives. So they got an idea: create a better soap that could give back and help save lives. With that, our BUY ONE, GIVE BACK program (and the company) were born. What makes your product special? In a world full of challenges, soap is our superpower. What if soap could do more than smell yummy and look pretty? At Hand in Hand, it does. By making the right decisions on everything from our supply chain to our packaging, something as small as soap can have a powerful impact on both people and planet. What has been the best part of your experience? In 2012 we had our first trip to Haiti, where we saw firsthand the effect our give back model could have on people’s lives. Unlike most personal care brands, we never use palm oil. Not only does the palm oil industry destroy rainforests and habitats, it is also responsible for rampant human rights abuses, inflicting cruelty on its workers and their and communities. Are Hand in Hand products vegan? All Hand in Hand ingredients are 100% vegan and never derived from or tested on animals. Our refusal to use palm oil also reflects our commitment to protect rainforest ecosystems and endangered species from deforestation and destruction. How big of an impact has Hand in Hand made with its "buy one, give back" program and global clean water mission ? To date we have donated over 13.8 million bars of soap, donated 120K gallons of clean water, and helped build new clean water wells in over 23 countries.
